Temperature gets all the attention, but humidity quietly decides whether a room feels pleasant or miserable. The same 21°C can feel crisp and comfortable, or cold and damp, depending on how much moisture is in the air.
In winter, cold outdoor air holds very little moisture. When it seeps into your home and gets heated, its relative humidity drops sharply — indoor air can fall below 30%. Very dry air increases evaporation from your skin, which has a slight cooling effect and can make a warm room feel cooler than the thermostat suggests. It also dries out eyes, skin and airways.
In summer the opposite happens. When the air is humid, sweat evaporates slowly, so your body can’t cool itself efficiently. That’s why 30°C in a humid climate feels far more oppressive than 30°C in a dry one — and why your AC’s ability to remove moisture matters as much as the temperature it hits.
Most people are comfortable indoors between 40% and 60% relative humidity. Within that band, the same temperature feels “right,” condensation is limited, and mould is discouraged.
